North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO)
- The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is an intergovernmental military alliance based on the North Atlantic Treaty which was signed in 1949.
- The organization establishes a system of collective defense, in which its member states agree to mutual defense in response to an attack by a non-member external party.
- NATO is headquartered in Boulevard Leopold III, Brussels, Belgium, where the Supreme Allied Commander resides.
Why was NATO formed?
- The main reason NATO officially states is to "preserve the independence, common heritage and civilization of member nations by promoting stability and prosperity in the North Atlantic".
- In practice, the Coalition shows that "the security of its European member states is inextricably linked with the security of its North American member states."
- The organization considered the Soviet Union and Communism a major threat to its security.
- After the 1989 revolutions in Eastern Europe and the end of the Soviet Union, NATO is now counting the former Soviet satellite nations as its member states.
